Quick Answer: What is FocusScore?

FocusScore is a free Chrome extension that turns your YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram browsing behaviour into a real-time Focus Score from 0 to 100. It measures five signals — long-form watch time, Shorts consumption, tab-switching, scroll speed, and idle time — and computes your score every 3 seconds locally in your browser. No data is ever sold. The Shorts blocker, AI weekly reports, and before/after progress view are all included free.

Understanding Your Focus Score

5 questions

A Focus Score is a number from 0 to 100 that measures how focused vs. distracted your online behaviour is in real time. A score of 80–100 indicates deep, intentional engagement. Below 40 signals high distraction from algorithmic content. It is computed every 3 seconds from five behavioural signals: long-form watch time, Shorts consumption ratio, tab-switching frequency, scroll speed, and idle time.

FocusScore analyses five signals: (1) long-form watch time vs. Shorts consumption, (2) tab-switching frequency, (3) scroll speed patterns, (4) idle time vs. active engagement, and (5) return-visit patterns. Each signal is weighted and combined into a single 0–100 score. Signals that indicate intentional browsing push the score up; distraction signals push it down.

80–100 (Peak Focus): Deep work mode — intentional, purposeful browsing. 60–79 (Focused): Mostly on-task with occasional distraction spikes. 40–59 (Developing): Mixed signals — improving but room to grow. 20–39 (Scattered): Frequent context switching and Shorts consumption. 0–19 (Distracted): Algorithmic content loop — attention needs rescue.

Your score reflects recent behaviour, not all-time history. If you spent the last 10 minutes watching YouTube Shorts or switching tabs rapidly, your score will drop. Open the extension popup to see which platform and signal drove the drop. The score recovers quickly when you return to intentional browsing.

FocusScore computes your score every 3 seconds using a rolling window of the last 200 browser events. This means the score is highly responsive — it reacts to distraction within seconds and also recovers within seconds when you shift to focused behaviour.

Getting Started

4 questions

Visit the Chrome Web Store and search for 'FocusScore', then click 'Add to Chrome'. Installation takes under 10 seconds. No account is required to start using the extension — your Focus Score appears in the popup immediately after you visit a tracked platform.

No. The core extension — real-time Focus Score, platform analytics, and Shorts blocking — works without any sign-up. Creating a free account unlocks 30-day dashboard history, AI weekly email reports, before/after comparison view, and cross-device sync.

FocusScore currently tracks YouTube (including Shorts detection), Facebook (including Suggested Posts), Instagram (including Reels), Twitter/X (including infinite scroll detection), Reddit (including Trending filter), and LinkedIn (including feed scroll and promoted content). You can enable or disable tracking per platform in the extension settings.

FocusScore is a Chrome browser extension and works on desktop Chrome (Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook). It does not currently work on mobile browsers. Firefox and Safari support is on our roadmap — join the waitlist at focusscore.ai for updates.

Privacy & Data

4 questions

FocusScore collects only anonymous behavioural signals: aggregated watch time, Shorts consumption ratio, tab-switching count, and scroll speed patterns. It does NOT collect keystrokes, page content, form data, passwords, full URLs, personal messages, or your general browsing history. Only the computed Focus Score number leaves your device.

Yes. FocusScore is GDPR and CCPA compliant. All computation happens locally in your browser. The only data sent to our servers is your anonymised Focus Score and session metadata (duration, platform). You can export or delete all your data at any time from the Dashboard → Settings page.

No. FocusScore runs as a lightweight content script with minimal CPU use in our own testing. No machine learning model runs on your device — scoring is performed by a fast, rule-based engine optimised for minimal resource usage.

Yes. From your dashboard, go to Settings → Data Controls, and you can export all your data as CSV or permanently delete your account and all associated data. Data deletion is permanent and irreversible.

Features & Usage

4 questions

Yes. FocusScore can automatically hide the YouTube Shorts shelf from your homepage, Shorts in search results, and the Shorts tab from the sidebar — so your YouTube feed stays focused on long-form content. This is configurable per-platform in the extension options popup.

The fastest improvements come from: (1) enabling the Shorts/Reels blocker to remove algorithmic loops, (2) reducing tab-switching by working in a single tab, (3) using the built-in Focus Timer for 25-minute deep work blocks. Most users see a 15–25 point improvement within two weeks of consistent use.

The Before & After view compares your first week using FocusScore against your most recent week. It shows changes in your Focus Score, Shorts consumption per day, tab-switching frequency, and number of deep focus sessions — in objective numbers so you can see real progress.

Yes. FocusScore includes a built-in Pomodoro-style Focus Timer that lets you start a 25-minute (or custom duration) focus block. During a focus block, the Shorts blocker is automatically enabled and you receive a notification if your score drops below a configurable threshold.

ADHD & Wellbeing

2 questions

Many users with ADHD report that FocusScore helps them by providing objective, real-time feedback on their attention state — replacing the unreliable self-assessment that is particularly challenging with ADHD. The before/after view and weekly reports create accountability loops without requiring willpower. FocusScore is not a medical device; always consult a healthcare professional for ADHD management.

FocusScore is for anyone who wants to understand and improve the quality of their digital attention — whether you are a student trying to study more effectively, a professional protecting deep work time, or someone with ADHD seeking objective focus data. It is not just for productivity optimisation.
